Independence in living away from home
Sometimes parents wonder about the wisdom of sending their children away from home even if the children are unhappy in their traditional schools.
Our experience is that when children are given the opportunity to have their childhoods to explore, play, and develop in their own individual ways, they flourish. They look back on this time with great fondness and appreciate the effort their parents made to provide this special environment. The experience of freedom in a democracy is like none other and children who grow up and graduate from Highland become caring, responsible adults.
Students also benefit from living in Highland’s dormitory. They are able to join in creating the culture and rules they live by. Caring staff members support boarding students in becoming equal members of the school community. All the protections of the school’s justice system apply to children in the dormitory. Relaxed “after school” time allows students to pursue any projects they were working on during the school day. They may continue games they were playing or spend time alone. The nearby rail - bike trail is one of many opportunities for physical recreation available to boarding students.
